David D. Lykins began his tenure as Superintendent of Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District (SOCUSD) on July 1, 2011. Since beginning his Superintendency, Mr. Lykins has worked tirelessly to provide all students with an education that prepares them to be successful and be college and/or career ready.

Mr. Lykins has worked collaboratively with staff, students, parents, and community members to develop a strategic and systematic focus for the skills and knowledge that the SOCUSD students will need both in college and in the work place.

During his SOCUSD superintendency, Mr. Lykins has been recognized for his desire and willingness to advocate for teachers and school staff. His unwavering efforts to increase teacher/staff salaries culminated in the first raise for the SOCUSD employees in seven years. His goal is to continue to create district financial efficiency in order to find additional dollars to continue moving the salary schedule and increase teacher/staff salaries annually.

Mr. Lykins has also worked diligently to energize staff, students, parents, and community members in conversations regarding education in a plethora of ways, including the development of a student internship program, and development of a district-wide newsletter, The Pulse, which has an interactive link to ask questions or provide feedback. He also surveyed all staffs at every school site in the district to determine individual site information surrounding student achievement, school safety, and school climate.

Mr. Lykins began his educational career in Boca Raton, Florida, in Palm Beach County, roughly three decades ago. His teaching assignments included science, health education, physical education, and special education, specifically with students who were emotionally disabled (ED) and severely emotionally disabled (SED). Mr. Lykins is a proud graduate of West Virginia Tech. He earned his Masters Degree from Northern Arizona University. Mr. Lykins is currently enrolled in a Doctoral Program, which he expects to complete in the near future.

As a self-professed lifelong learner, Mr. Lykins enjoys cultivating relationships that provide relevance and results to the students of SOCUSD.

Mr. Lykins is the fortunate superintendent of the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District, and is proud to have had the opportunity to serve this district in many capacities for over a decade and a half.
